He learned his skills from the masters who built some of the first electric guitars in the '50s, and was a personal friend of Leo Fender. I approached him about turning a guitar build he authored online into a fully-fledged book. In it, he teaches how to build a vintage-style electric guitar from scratch using only basic tools and readily available materials. This is the cover of the forthcoming book; the inner pages are currently a work in progress.
